The UN spokesperson announced that Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the Under Secretary-General for Peace Operations, is scheduled to arrive in Kabul on Wednesday, May 15.
During this two-day visit, Lacroix will focus on raising awareness about the dangers of unexploded ordnance from the war.
Ilene Cohn, Director of United Nations Mine Action Service, will also accompany the Under Secretary-General on this trip.
This visit comes ahead of the third Doha meeting organised by the United Nations. The Taliban have not yet announced their participation in this meeting.
In an official statement, the United Nations said that the purpose of the visit is to develop effective strategies for clearing explosive materials in Afghanistan.
The UN emphasised on the urgency of this issue in its statement, noting that mines threaten the lives of the Afghan people, with 821 people killed in mine explosions from January 2023 to March 2024.
